Kids and Dogs

Saturday November 27, 2010 12:15pm

Last weekend I went south to Douglas County for some pre-national training on some GREAT property and also to spend time with my four year old niece, Makenna.  The training grounds were excellent and my dogs got a ton of work including Makenna "training" them.  Makenna told me multiple times over the visit, "I want to be a dog trainer just like you Aunt May (my middle name is May) and have a dog truck." Since Makenna is only four her training skills are a bit limited but she doesn't know.  She loves to run the dogs on single retrieves, and give them their dinner when they are done dog training.

After spending the weekend with the dogs and Makenna it made me think about how important my dogs were to me through out my childhood.  Dogs have a lot to teach children for example; patience, empathy, and responsibility.  If your child is interested in training your dog, bird  hunting, or maybe you don't have a dog but would like to get you child around them thier are MANY oppurtunties!  Following are a few options for your kids and their dog:

For kids who want to train their dog on their own 4-H.

If your son or daughter is interested in hunting there are many opportunities check out the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

If your son or daughter is interested in competing in AKC events such as Hunt Tests (Makenna will be doing this as soon as possible) visit the AKC website for Junior Handler information.

For those of you who's families do not have a dog you can always volunteer at an animal shelter to get all the dog interaction you want and maybe even find the next member of your family visit the Columbia Humane Society or the Oregon Humane Society both have youth volunteer programs.
